Depends on your preference. Are you a Canon or a Nikon person?

If you are looking at the high-end Canons or Nikons, it may be worth taking each model out for a dry run by "renting" them from a professional camera store for a day or so. That's the only way to get the "feel" of the controls and actually learn how to take pictures with a "pro" camera.

If you are looking for the best overall pro package for around $600, check out the Pentax K100D 6.1 mp DSLR with image stabilization built into the camera body. You can get a real good deal at samys.com which includes the normal 18-55 mm. Pentax lense and a 75-200 mm. Pentax telephoto along with (1) a case; (2) a 1 gig SD memory card, (3) tripod, and (4) $40 worth of print processing.

Good luck!

Chose the one that feels best in your hands and does the thing you want to do. Either choice is good and both make a wide range of digital camera from $200 to several thousand dollars.

I shoot Nikon, but have often recommended Canon. If it doesn't work for you, then it's not the right choice. (kinda like choosing clothes, cars, or friends)

First of all, what are your priorities?

Compactness? Zoom ratio? Price? Interchangeable lenses? Sports photography? Simplicity of use? In-camera photo editing? It's important to decide.

Yes, you can have it all, but the price is usually prohibitive.

Give us some more guidance about you and your needs/wants/budget and we can give you some informed choices.

The best camera for you is the one that you WILL use, not the one friends recommend that you leave at home.

It depends on your photographic needs. If you are looking for a point and shoot camera with other features such as video capabilities and manual settings, I suggest you go for a Canon PowerShot S3IS or the newly-released Canon PowerShot S5IS. I have an S3IS myself, and it did not disappoint me. It has a very long zoom range with image stabilization, fast shutter response, and very good image quality.

If you are looking for an SLR camera, a Canon EOS 400D is a very good choice. If you have a larger budger, you can go for a Canon EOS 30D or a Canon EOS 5D. If you want the best digital SLR from Canon, buy the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. You may also purchase very good lenses for these cameras.

I do not own any Nikon cameras, but I heard Nikon D80 digital SLR camera is a very good camera.

You can go to http://dpreview.com to check for different cameras and also read different reviews about these cameras.

If the cameras you are considering are the type that has lenses you change...

Investigate whether the Nikon accepts interchangeable lenses from their other auto-SLR lines. It's been a awhile since my still photography days, but Nikon you pay more, but I was glad I did because of the lenses Nikon makes. Canon makes excellent systems, but Nikon seems to have the most universal lenses that swap with more of the different kinds of cameras they make.

But personally, I would wait. Kodak has announced a higher density mechanism for digital photography that will shoot in lower light conditions without a flash, coming out next year. It remains to be seen if Kodak will make a professional level of cameras. In the past they engineered hobbyist cameras for the mass market.

I have a Canon that my father gave me. It's a 35mm circa 1979. I absolutely love it. I still havent bought a digital camera. I'm an artist, photography is a hobby and my Canon is perfect for that. All and all Canons are the better camera.

Amature or Pro, or super Pro?

Telephoto or wideangle?

Compact or SLR?

Check the site www.dpreview.com and use the features search to narrow down the camera you'd like.

Not knowing anything else, if you are going for a SLR, stay with Canon or Nikon. Canon I like 30D or 5D. Nikon I like D40 or D200.

I assume you want to get a digital camera. Canon is better in shoot people and Nikon better in landscape.
