The "eight glasses a day" you often hear is only partially true. It's true if you're a sendentary 128-lb person living in a temperate climate.

As stated in an above post, a half ounce per pound of body weight will keep you sufficently hydrated under most circumstances. If you exercise heavily, drink more than a half ounce per pound of body weight. If you're outside in hot, dry weather, also up your water consumption. As a bonus, if you're trying to lose weight, drink an additional glass or two of water daily beyond the half ounce rule to help your liver and kidneys flush out toxins.

It could be, drinking too much water will dilute your electrolytes. Electrolytes are highly important to things like you heart. The body needs very specific ratios of sodium and potassium, too much water destroys the delicate balance and can cause heart failure. Follow the 8 by 8 rule, 8, 8 ounce glasses of water should be what you should aim for.
