It depends on a few things like:
1) How long has the couple been together?
2) What kind of wedding does the couple want?
For example, if the couple has been together for several years, the engagement should be as long as it'll take for the couple to plan a wedding of their choice. If they want an all-out affair, they'd probably need a year to plan/reserve things. If, however, they plan on a small or quick shindig, they will not need a year. Perhaps a few to several months will do.
If the couple has been together for only a short time (less than a year), a longer engagement (a year at a minimum) is generally a good idea to give the couple time to plan things and to get familiar with the idea of commitment.

I read many years ago in a magazine that they did a study and determined that an engagement should be no longer than 18 months. When engagements were longer than that people were more likely to call off the wedding and exhibit signs of cold feet and thereby call off the wedding. Mine was 15 months and I thought that was the perfect amount of time. My sister's was 2 years and sad to say she called off the wedding 3 months before.

How long is a piece of string? There are no rules, some people marry within a matter of days, I know in the UK that you must apply to marry no later that 16 days before the wedding, so I guess anywhere from 16 days to a good few years. Most people use the engagement period to save for the wedding, we saved for 6 months.

There's no set minimum or maximum engagement time. Some people drag an engagement out to several years, and others shorten it to a couple of months.
I've never been engaged for more than three months. (In case that sounds like I'm a Hollyweird type, I've been married twice--first time for fifteen years, and I just celebrated my 25th anniversary in the second marriage.)

everyone's situation is different. I know people who have been engaged for 15 years and just never had the money to have a propper wedding, some people just run out and get married that day in vagas.
It's really up to the couple.

Nicole, it varies from couple to couple. If it's going to be a big, expensive wedding, it could be as much as a year or two, during which time the wedding is being planned with a professional. On the other hand, it could be skipped altogether by couples who want to elope to Las Vegas.
It's a personal choice, so think about your particular situation, and plan it with your fiance`.

Eight months to a year, just long enough to plan the wedding.
