Is there any benefits of having a serrated blade pocket knife compared to a straight blade? From personal experience I've had problems sharpening a serrated blade, but can someone list the pros and cons to me of straight blade v.s. serrated.

Thanks

Serrated is mostly for rope. Especially if you need to cut it in a hurry. Otherwise everyone is right about straight being more durable an easier to sharpen. Consider a survival-type knife with a straight blade for the main cutting edge and serrated on the inside edge. Best of both worlds, but I know mine doesn't fit in my pocket!

Serrated blades are real popular these days, but I wouldn't buy one. It is hare enough to keep a good edge on a straight blade, serrated blades are a real PIA to keep properly sharpened.

The only serrated knife I own (other than a bread knife) was given to me as a gift by a friend a few years ago.

Serrated is lighter and it's easier to cut with. A straight blade should be easier to cook with. Also, a straight blade should be considerably stronger than a serrated blade. If you ever try to cut something very hard with a serrated blade, it gets very dull very fast, and the teeth might even break off. Whereas a straight blade will stay sharp longer, and is able to cut very hard objects.

The only benifit in having a sereted blade is that even when they have dulled, they can kinda saw through rope and other fibery materials better than a dull straighedge knife can.

I dont like serrated knives because they are such a pain to sharpen so I almost exclusively carry straight edge knives. they make a cleaner cut and if they get dull on you are quick and easy to sharpen.
