Matthew chapter 1 verses 1-17
1A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
2Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
7Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[a] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
Abiud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Eliud,
15Eliud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.[b]

God promised King David that He could provide him an enduring kingdom. in accordance to scripture, Jesus replaced right into a decedent of King David with the aid of Mary. as a results of fact Jesus' Kingdom is God's Kingdom, Jesus replaced into the fulfilled promise to King David.

His mother Mary was a direct descendant of the "Line of David"
His "Step-Father" or Adoptive father, Joseph, was also a descendant of the Line of David, that split off at a different point than Mary's ancestors, making them distant cousins.
Every generation coming after David and in his line were all considered sons or daughters of the line of David.

Like one of the previous answers said, Mary was a direct decendant of David (the guy who slew Goliath). There was a prophecy that a Messiah would be born from David's decendants to deliver the people of Isreal. That's what had King Herod all freaked out around the time of Jesus's birth. He thought the prophecy was talking about a King that would supplant him as a political ruler.

God promised Abraham that the messiah would come from his line. The line of Kings. Thus, Jesus is an ancestor of David. Just reminding people of the prophecy and authenticating Jesus.

actuall it says that his (step-father?) Joseph was of the house and lineage of David... so the way I see it... Jesus couldn't have been related to David at all, because joe wasn't really his father, was he?
later...
why the thumbs down? the only biblical verses i see here refer to Joseph being descended from David, and according to the Bible, Joseph was NOT the father of Jesus, right? so exactly how is Jesus decended from David? (or could it be that the ones making the claims were making stuff up to "fulfil the prophesy?"

This is talking about "lineage" - Jesus was born from the "Royal" line of personalities. The tribe of Judah was this "Royal" line in the nation of Israel and King David was from it and Christ is referred to as the "King of kings" in the Book of Revelation, in the Bible.

Isaiah prophecied that the Messiah would be from the "root of David." Genealogically, Jesus is descended from David, therefore, He fulfills that prophecy.
