I am the FRG leader for my husbands unit, and I am looking for any information about how much leave is permitted for a father of a newborn. We have quite a few pregnant ladies in our unit and I don't know if there is any such regulation, or if it is left up to the comanders descresion. Either way I just want to make sure I know as much as I can before I speak with our 1SG.

no regulation..strictly command policy. Most will allow a few days Special Liberty, but paternity leave comes out of regular leave, is chargeable as such, and in many cases isn't granted unless they are not in the field.

I haven't heard of the Army (or any branch) letting you do that. I am familiar with the mission the Mormons take though. You probably should wait until you have meet your Mission requirements then go into the military. I know that that is an important part of your religion, so I am not going to knock it. You have to realize that the military will try to accommodate when possible religious needs, but they can not accommodate all of them. Usually the accommodations are about diet and certain times they let people attend religious services for observance of holidays. (Holly Days). If you are in the Guard and you unit deploys and they consider you in a critical career then it will be very hard to get your furlow. You really should just wait. I wouldn't risk it if it was that important to me. You can still join once you finished your mission.

My understanding is that there is no such thing as paternity leave. Father's may request to take regular leave though, which of course comes out of their leave days that are saved up. That said, if the father is deployed at the time, leave will most likely not be granted.

Here is the Army regulation on leaves: http://usmilitary.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.usapa.army.mil/pdffiles/r600%5F8%5F10.pdf

I didn't read it, but I did a word search on the (long!) document and the word "paternity" does not occur.

There was no such category of leave when I was on active duty, only women who gave birth had leave and that was for medical reasons primarily. But I'm ten years out of date so who knows what's happened since then? :-)
