The line gets muddled with Salmon & searun cutthroat as they are caught both in Fresh and Salt Water (among another handful of species). In reality you are consuming meat that is made from a marine creature.

The difference between salt water fish and fresh water is liver function - which is why so few fish can live in both environments. The biology explanation is complicated - but that's what it boils down to...

Would it be false advertisement to label fish as seafood in a restaurant that only serves fresh water species - maybe, but seafood in the american vernacular comes to include any marine creature including crabs, crayfish, calimari, etc not just fish.

In the end - is it easier to say (and advertise) seafood ...or we serve fish, calimari, clam chowder, and crayfish? That's likely how the confusion all started.

Good play on words. But Salmon is andronomous, meaning it lives in the sea but swims upstream in fresh water where it is often caught b/4 it spawns and dies!! So, is it still sea food?

No, it is just considered fish.

I think Mountain Trout is the best other than Lobster or Halibut.

Mountain Trout and other fish in fresh water streams are much healthier for us.

I don't think they have Mercury in them like the fish in the ocean.

No. But most restaurants advertise fish and seafood-referring to both fresh and saltwater fish as well as things like shrimp, crab, scallops, etc.- that are not fish.

Technically speaking, no. It is just called fish.

Sea food is technically any creature that comes from salt water. Except salt water taffy, that is candy, not sea food.

No. And it really ticks me off to go to a restaurant and order a SEAFOOD platter only to discover it's catfish. I don't care for freshwater fish, but I love seafood!
