You commit to a certain date to enter the Corp. You could be in school etc. and have a reason not to go immediately. They will defer entry for up to a year in some cases. Check with your local USMC recruiter and see. Good Luck and SEMPER FI !!!!!!!

It is a program in which a high school senior can join the marine corps in his/her senior year of school. During this time, senior would meet with the recruiter each month in which they may go over some history of the marine corps or you may even take a physical fitness test. Also, by signing up your senior year this time would count toward your inactive reserve. So after you serve your four years in the marines when you get out you will only have to do three more years of inactive service instead of the four. This is a good program because you will kind of have an advantage on the other people going into the marine corps. I did it and it was good. Sempre Fi!

Delayed Entry program is one in which you enlist, but your movement to basic training is delayed until after you complete school. It's designed for those in their senior year of high school and permits the Marines and other services to have a more managed flow of new recruits into basic training.

All branches of the service have a delayed entry program, in which you contract to join but don't actually go to basic training until a date in the future. For example, I enlisted in October and went to basic training in December because that's when the job I wanted was open. From the time you sign until the time you report, you just go on with your life.
