That guys gave you such a prissy butt answer the way he corrected you there. What were you supposed to do? He had his "school marm" hat on. What a dork.

Were you too hard on the guy? Only you can judge that ("too hard" for one person would be "too easy" for another depending on individual values)...
But I can tell you that I think about (and sometimes even write) comments like that nearly every day. I teach college students and you wouldn't believe the kind of nonsense I get via email every day. People will say things in email that they would never say to your face and it is often tempting to point out the error of their ways!
The "idiot" was perhaps too harsh...that's a global judgment that you didn't have the evidence to make...but the rest focused entirely on the words in his message and if I didn't have to deal with student evaluations, I'd respond in a similar manner to almost half the email messages I receive from students on any given day!

Yes i do think you were too hard on this guy. You should check out anger management classes. It shows a complete lack of maturity if you have to resort to name calling. You asked a question and he gave his answer/opinion. There was no need to respond at all.

I'd just ignore those who are rude and snoody!
