yeah it will be free, microsoft would have to have some serious cojones to charge for a service pack

If you mean "update" as in having the bugs "ironed out" then yes,all Microsoft service packs and hotfixes are free ,if you mean upgrade as in change from home basic to premium etc then I doubt that would happen.
Microsoft are always working to iron out bugs etc especially in new systems like Vista,it will take some time and It probably won't ever be perfect but it will imrove with time.

if you have retai version of vista ( like vista home basic, home premium, ultimate, etc) then you can update your vista for free. microsot release patches to correct bugs in vista. you can download it from microsoft website or using windos update, its FREE.
but if you use trial version or beta/alpha/RC release of vista, then i dont know
