A car ran into a car and hit the back of it, the car that was hit then ran into a car in front of him. Does the car in the middle that was pushed into the front car have to pay for the front car or does the car that hit the middle car have to pay for the front car. I have heard it both ways, because the driver was to close and did not have his car under control at all times. This did happen at a stop light.

The driver that caused the accident is the one who has to pay for all the damage. The driver in the middle was stopped. He was hit. As long as he was stopped without touching the car in front of him (prior to being hit and pushed forward), he did nothing wrong. No matter how many cars are in the chain reaction, the driver who hits the rear and caused the accident is the one liable.

This assumes that this is not a no fault state, where you are not held accountable for the damage you cause!

Did you signal? Did you call the cops and file a police report? A report helps GREATLY in situations like this. If the damage is to the rear of your car only, it is likely the other driver's insurance will pay for your damages and consider him/her at fault. However, if the damage is to the side of your vehicle or at some other angle other than strictly rear damage, you will likely have to endure a drawn out process as the insurance company investigates. If the other company straight up denies your claim, file with your insurance and ask that they investigate. They may be able to subrogate against the other party. In most cases that *I* have seen like this where our insured has hit someone else in the rear, we ended up paying the claim. But then again, not all insurance companies are as fair as the one I work for. Good luck. Hope you have lots of patience!!

Who is at fault when someone hits your car depends on the location where the ... at fault when a car is hit from behind is the person that hit the car from behind.

It doesn't really matter, because insurance pays, but if insurance screws you (like they usually try to do), then the at-fault driver pays. It depends on the conditions of the collision. I would say that the at-fault driver is the one that failed to stop in time, and started the chain reaction. However, an accident investigator will usually come out and look at specifics of the accident. Sometimes there is no at-fault driver.
