I wanted to add color to a room without painting/wallpapering also. I used a border in one room. To make it "stick" I stapled it in places where it isn't noticeable. A friend of mine bought beautiful sheets of fabric (silk-like) and pinned them to the walls of her apt. she made flat in one room and bunched up in another. what about appliques? They are like plastic stickers that you can put on the walls and they come right off. They won't damage or stain the walls. Art work helps too.

RE:
how can i put color on the wall without using paint?
I'm moving into an apt with white walls and we're not allowed to paint or use wall paper. I cant live with white walls, boring! Besides posters - how can I apply color to the wall but still be able to take it off when it comes time to move?

You can find some colorful tapestries to put on the wall. I had this really beautiful quilt that I couldn’t use because it’s made with velvet and satin (and my dog and cat would just ruin it and put hair all over it) so I hung it on my wall so I can get some enjoyment out of it without ruining it. You could also just buy some material and kind of drape them on your walls in a neat way. Look on decorating websites and magazines to give you some ideas. Good luck.

Pictures, sconces, and framed mirrors. With the sconce, you can put a candle on it, to light the room. It also adds color. If you have it next to a framed mirror, you can create a luminous surrounding. But note, don't leave any candle burning unattended.
You should get pictures that provide movement in a room. Don't put too many on the walls if you want to go for simplicity.
Remember, less is more.

I agree with some of the other posters: Use sheets.
Most sheets have a large hem pocket at one end and a smaller pocket on the other. I found that the smaller pocket is usually large enough to fit a yard stick inside. Twin sheets work best with yard sticks. Once you've got the yard stick in the pocket, screw it to the wall, snug with the ceiling.
It's cheap, too:
Yard Stick - $.50
Twin Sheets from Wal-Mart - around $3.00
I also used this method to make a canopy for my bed. Instead of screwing the sticks to the wall, I screwed them to the ceiling.

they have some really neat wall hangings that are big and would cover most of the wall. They sell a lot of really cool ones at head shops and come in all sorts of colors. I have found that it works the best for that problem...i hate white walls as well!!

you could also use up lights with a colored light bar to wash the wall with colored light. OR you can use liquid starch and dip a favorite piece of cloth into the liquid laundry starch then brush it onto the wall like when applying wallpaper. It comes right off when you want to clean it or move. No leftover mess.

You can buy colorful sheets.....Flat sheets not fitted....the Hem is already there.....You can use one or a whole wall of them.....Curtain rods, the cheap ones with extensions, or wire and eye hooks....Sheets come in awesome colors nowadays, from vibrant to soft, earth tones, wild, or themed.....
The worst you'll have to do it take a small amount of joint compound, very inexpensive, to patch the holes, if you move out.....Depending on how much wall your covering, would tell you what size sheets to get.....Queen/King would be a lot of fabric....and you couldn't make "curtains" or anything else what it would cost you in fabric or wallpaper.......

1. Hang large sections of cloth/blankets/silks. (Build a square frame from wood and staple fabric or upholstry to it with a staple gun or hang large swashes of material.) 2. Funky plastic plates etc. can be purchased, drilled and nailed to the wall, using thin nails. 3. Hang window blinds from top of wall. Buy colored, or natural materials like straw/woven for texture.

I actually saw this done ..
A friend ws in the same situation..
She Bought flat bed sheets and put them up with clear tacks in the corners..
You have the color and when you do move all you have to do is patch a few tiny holes..
Hope this helps..
