I want to be a fashion designer or something along the lines of that. I am in high school how can I develop skills to help me in this. I am thinking about attending FIDM ( Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) my mom does not want me to do this because she does not think the fashion industry is safe. What do you think? She is starting to scare me about it. Of all these campusus which one do you think might be the safest. Los Angles, San Diego, San Fransisco, or Orange County. And one more thing my mom says that you have to have sex with the owner of a fashion design company to get a good job with that company. Is she right. I dont think so. But I dont really know for sure.

Allow me to side with your mother on this one.

Whever I go on the internet, I find personal webpage, blogs and youtube clips of young women that want to get into the fashion industry. There are about ten billion young women your age that all want to do the same thing.

Ok. Now it's time for an alternative gameplan here.

If you can afford it, go to college. Major is something like business management or business administration or better yet...accounting! ALL businesses NEED accountants.

If you can not afford a 4 year or 2 year college degree, then go to one of those 18 month business schools. Do the same thing, get a business ceriticate or accounting certificate for completing the classwork.

Ok, now onto step two. So, you want to work in fashion? Great, now you have a real business background that people want. At the bottom of the ladder, you can start to work for a chain store like Macys. Or, something more upscale like Nordstroms. When you get there, you will probably run into "merchandisers" from companies like Ralph Lauren or Yves Saint Lauren. Merchandisers are basically people that go from store to store to make sure that their products are being properly....ah...merchandised. These people are always changing jobs, and when you get to know a few, it may lead to getting to know who does the hiring for those positions. Next thing you know, you have a job as a merchandiser. Once you get into the business like that, you will run into other merchandisers and sales people from competing product lines. You know what to do? Treat them as friends! It's not unusual to have coffee and share war stories with others in the same industry. In your conversations, they will give you the inside scoop on which companies are good to work for, and which ones treat their employees like slaves. You don't have to meet the movers and shakers, just pay attention to the names that people give you. When you want to make the next move, you give them a call.

Ok, so I have typed enough here. So, in summary. Forget about the direct fashion career path. Everyone in the world is trying that right now. Go to school and get an education that is applicable in a wide variety of business enterprises. Accounting is the best. You don't have to be come a CPA, just know a little about general bookkeeping. If you still want to get into the fashion industry, then YOU have something that is VALUABLE - a knowledge of business...and not just...ah...fashion.

First, it's great that you know what you want to be! Secondly, I'd say San Diego, or San Francisco would be safest. You do NOT have to have sex with anyone to get a good job, and if the employer says you do, get out, and find a better company. Contact FIDM, and see if you can meet them. Bring your mom, and try to put her at ease about everything. See if the school can put you in touch with a fashion designer that your mom could talk to and ask questions about the business. Good luck!!

This is the kind of career where you need to Eat, Sleep, Drink, and totally live it 24/7 to be a huge success. So if you can think of other jobs you'd be happy in, this probably isn't the best choice for you - danger and whatever - that can happen anywhere, anytime.
This career is like being an actor or artist....if you can't do it or be it, you'll just wither up and die.....so only you know how you really feel about it. Either go for it totally or make another choice! Good Luck~!
