Is that an old term than isn't used anymore? That was the standard when I was little.

We would say oh there is Sister Jean or Brother John....I don't hear that anymore.

You used to hear that in our faith a lot, but few use it anymore and think it old fashioned. But, we love it and meiss it. Because we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, and when we remmeber we are family, it reallly helps us to contnue to love each other even in the midst of any disagreements. I loe this and I wish ppl would bring it back. When we do hear this now occasionally, we jsut love it and say how grateful we are. NOt all of us have Christian famiilies and close relationshps. ANd to know we hve brothers and sisters in Christ is a good thing. LEts try and bring it back. May take awhile, but if we keep it up, we will have victory.

No, on Sunday morning I'm occupied...The New York Times, coffee and a blueberry muffin at Starbucks, chats with folks who stop to say hello. But I often say, 'Brothers and sister atheists." Though I've been criticized here by Fundies for saying it, the words are in the public domain and as an American I am perfectly at home--unlike radical theocratic Fundies--with the First Amendment to our Constitution. I like the phrase, it sings a bit, doesn't it?

On occasion when someone in my church is praying for another person who is right there, he / she will say, for example, "Lord, please lift up my brother in Christ, John, etc., etc." But I don't hear many people say " Hi Sister Patti. Where is Brother Tom today?" I don't know if it is different denominations that are more inclined to say this or whether it was something said more in older times. But you are right, we don't hear it that often any more.

In the Catholic church, a "brother" is a seminary student or a monk, and nuns are called "sister", but not lay folk. I think the LDS use those terms a lot.

Well I do at my church, I'm religious. We still use that saying, Sister Wiston or Brother Gooden. I'm sure it's still used it just that you are so used to it that you don't notice it anymore. Just count it up over the next week or two. I'm sure you get a surprise,...or maybe not.

In Mormonism we still use Brother and Sister as titles. Sometimes we'll use that title in conjunction with the first name (Brother Joseph), but usually it's followed by the surname (Sister Young).

Don't pay attention to Cheese and Rice or the lady that answered before me. Yup! at our church (Mormon) we call each other by Brother or Sister... at least in my ward we don't only use last name, we also use our first names. For example, they usually call me Hermana Kimberly (hermana = sister... I go to a Spanish ward) or just Kimberly, it doesn't matter but for the missionaries, they are called Elder [insert last name here]. ^_^

Brother Cheese and Rice is correct! The Mormons do it not only in church but when they meet each other at the store, on the street, but not at the liquor store.
