Most orthognathic (jaw straightening) surgery is done in a hospital. How long a patient is kept in the hospital depends on the extent of the surgery. Some are done on an out-patient basis, meaning they can go home the same day, but many stay overnight or longer. Most work is done on the lower jaw, or mandible. Surgery on the upper jaw, or maxilla, is usually more extensive, and the patient may spend more time in the hospital for recovery. Since the patient's jaw is usually wired shut, he or she must drink from a straw for a few weeks until the jawbone heals.
During your brother's stay in the hospital he will be cared for by many professionals, all of whom want him to have the best result possible. No it won't kill him. Yes, he will be asleep and won't feel anything. When he awakens, he will get medicine to lessen the pain.

I'm 17 and I just had a le fort 1, 2 weeks ago. Le fort 1 is a type of orthognathic surgery, no it doesn't kill you. It's a process to correct the jaws, I had an open bite, so the surgeons operated on my mouth so I can have an better bite. I stayed in the hospital over night, and I'm feeling better now. My jaws are wired shut, but in other cases people can have elastic bands to keep the jaws together. This just helps with the healing process. Good luck to your brother.

wow! it would be nice if all sisters cared about their brothers as much as you. google the word. and several choices come up. it seems it is a fancy word for mouth/jaw surgery. he will be totally asleep during surgery and won't feel a thing. he'll probably be in the hospital for a few days. these days they don't keep you in the hospital very long. i had stomach surgery on 3-27-07. they let me out 3-29-07. he'll be o.k. in fact when he heals up, he'll be better than he was before the surgery.

Aww you're so cute worrying about your big brother like that! He'll be okay. He'll be in an oral surgeon's office. It's probably to have a few teeth removed, wisdom teeth maybe? Or fix TMJ if he suffers from it. He will be okay though, don't worry. :-)
