What is wrong with the double layer DVDs I'm burning?

I download video from some news groups. For the 4.7GB DVDs, I burn them and they work fine in my DVD players. But when I burn 8.5GB double layer DVDs, my DVD players don't recognize them.

What could I be doing wrong?

Both my DVD players are playing commercial double layer DVDs that I own.

Not many DVD players will play double layered DVD's.

How about the dvd burner, will it playback the double layer data? If so then it's probably not closing disc properly.
