I look at the middle pin and try to get my ball there

Not if you want to really get good at this.

What you're doing is more or less called "pin bowling". Your target is a bit too far away to hit easily. That's why the pros ALL "spot bowl" -- they pay attention to their initial foot position and try to hit one of the spots just out beyond the foul line. It's a LOT easier to see, focus on and hit a close-in target, and you'll be a lot more consistent with your spares as well. Takes a while to get used to it, but it's well worth it.

Now, get out there and rattle those pins!
