"Religion" is man made, man's attempt to achieve holiness, enlightenment, etc. God wants a "relationship" through his Son Jesus Christ. Religion is about "repression", man thinking he can do it on his own. The relationship with Christ is about "repentance", man admitting that he can't do it on his own and receiving the Holy Spirit, the helper. It is not a lie. The lie is that man can work his way up to God. The truth is that God came down to do for us what we could not.
