Im currently an E-5 Army Infantry and have been deployed a few times. I just married my girlfriend and want to settle down and start a family. Is it hard to get a transfer to a reserve or National Guard unit? I mean right now, reserves and NG are basically active duty anyways right?

Yes, I do realize that I have to fulfill my enlistment requirement first.

To the USAF wife/mother:

Army/Marine deployments arent three month Air Force deployments. We go over for up to 18 months at a time, im sure you havent gone a year and a half without seeing your husband? Besides, this is a personal choice that I want to be home with my family but still serve my country. Im sure I could find a way to have a family and be active duty, but I want to see my kids grow up.

You can't "transfer". you have to fulfill your enlistment contract and then you can choose to go into the reserves or NG. As an E-5 you should know that. The mjority of the military manage to have families and do thier jobs. Why in the world would having a familiy stop you from being in the Army? My husband deploys frequently and my 4 year old son and I manage just fine. I'm sure that your girlfriend knew about your military service befor she married you and knew that you are deployable.

EDIT
You have no idea what my husband does. He does not have an admin job and he does not work 7-4. He works 12 hour shifts on the flightline with one day off per week WHEN he is home. He in now on deployemnt NUMBER SIX. He has done one 12 month tour and five 4 month tours. He was home for 3 weeks in between his 4 month tours. You do the math! He has volunteered for every deployment he has been on.

Being an E-5 you should already know the answer.

First, you should know that guard/ reserve are deploying often and as long as active, so I don't know why going that route would be better.

Second of all, your response to the AF wife is just rude. You have no idea what people in the AF do. If people in the Army would learn to follow directions things would not be as bad as they are and the AF would not have to come and fix everything for you. And YES, they do go for 1 to 2 years without their families. There have not been 3 month deployments since the early Clinton years, except for SOME jobs, but that is the same for all branches.

SGT you do realize the Guard and Reserves deploy correct?
I have never heard of anyone getting a transfer from Active to Reserves or Guard.. ETS out SGT .. Then go Guard or Reserves but you will still be deployed.

I would have loved for my husband to come to my AIT graduation but he was deployed ..

I would have loved to see my youngest go to his 1st day of kindergarten better yet I am sure my husband would have loved to see him walk...

Try teaching in AIT for your MOS , then there is recruiting.

The Guard and Reserves are 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks out of the yr .. then we deploy.

do your time until your ETS. Once you get to your ETS or your re-enlistment window opens... see if you can reclass into another MOS. If you cant reclass into something that is not combat arms... get out. I would avoid guard and reserve. They deploy more than active duty. I would stick it out.

When you do get out, you will be very marketable. You will be surprised at the doors open to you soley becuase of your military service.

Be smart, finish your time and stay out of trouble.
I suggest you try to get a federal job or civil service once you get out.. you can apply your time in the Army toward a retirement with the government. This way the time isnt wasted.

Look into online college classes, take advantage of the 100% tuition assistance and set yourself up for success if you do decide to ETS.

If you decide to get out be smart about it and have a plan... start that plan today, you wont regret it.

Thanks for your service

TedEx really needs to explain the TS card.

Jason, fulfill your active duty commitment and the guard/reserves will be glad to have you.

It was also a personal commitment when you signed up. I know it's hard on the family life but I guarantee you've been "home" more than I.

I think your best bet would be to change your MOS, as infantry your gonna get deployed alot. my hubby is a mechanic he has been deployed twice and im sure once more before we fulllfill our contract, i also have heard of transfering to another branch as active duty but not to the reserves, my brother in law is reserve (contracter) he has been deployed once and is looking at another one soon. i hope all works out for you ,,

i dont know how hard it is to transfer over to NG/reserve FROM active duty, but its pretty easy to transfer from NG/reserve TO active duty. as of right now, there are plenty of reserve units who are now active in iraq/afghanistan. but i would still rather be NG/reserve over active duty. the way i see it, i was smart enough not to join the drones of braindead marines, unfortunately, i was not smart enough to join the cushy 3-6 month tours in the hilton of Iraq that the air force enjoys. but i am smarter then you in that i did join the national guard... and now u know why. Good luck transfering over.
