I have been deployed more than a dozen times. No body really likes to deploy but we do it and make the best of it. Two of the best things are 1. You know that you are doing something that is important for America. We know that while people say how much they appreciate our service that the majority really don't understand what we are doing and that is OK. 2. Comradery. You develop a bond with other unit members that you don't have back in the states. Its not easy to define but the friendships are more intense - you seem to be able to read each others minds and know who is down and who is up. A weird part is that sometimes you can have long conversations with only looks, gestures and just a couple of words. The friendships still exist stateside but they are different. I guess its because you know that everyone depends on each other to get through. The worst deployment I ever had was being gone when my daughter was born. She was almost a year old before I got to see her in person and hold her for the first time.

When my brother got back from Iraq, (national guard duty) he went back over as a civillian employee, says it is no worse there than anywhere else. Making the money that only some people dream about, and enjoys his work. (the details are top secret)

By the way, in WWII, our men were deployed only once. It was for "The duration."
