after I got married all I had to do was bring my marriage license to the ministry of transporatation and health and whatever documants I needed changed and they go ahead and do it. there was no legal process. now if you change your name then decide to change it back ever there is a legal process to go through...but not if your just getting married.

After you get married, the minister mails in the marriage license to the proper authorities. You must then wait a little while (here in NC it is 10 days) before you can pick up certified copies of your marriage license.

First you take that to the Social Security office. You fill out forms to legally change your name. Then you can go to the DMV to change your license. Sometimes you can do both on the same day; some have a waiting process for the SSA to finish paperwork before you change your license. You take your marriage license and your new SSA card to the DMV and they will change it right away for you.

Getting a certified marriage license is the legal process. It is a legal wedding and then filed with the state. That is all that is required to start changing your name, but you will still need to file paperwork to change it.

In most states you use your certified marriage license to change your name on all legal papers such as driver's license, social security cards and banking accts.

the marriage is a legal process. your marriage certificate is legal and binding. you can't change your name with soc. sec. or on your driver license with out it.

The reason is because it lists your maiden name and your new name with signatures.

I can tell you for sure it is that way in Texas...I'm not sure what legal process you would have to go through anyway..the wedding ceremony IS the legal process...the dude signs the paper and bam, your name is legally changed.

All I took with me anywhere was my marriage license...and when I got divorced, all I took with me was my divorce decree. no extra process to go through.

when you apply for your marriage license, you state then if you will be taking on the new last name or not.

That's all you need in most states. You start at the social security office, then the DMV...
