and now it won't work at all, the tv just turns itself off no matter what I do and it won't eject the video or play it. I pay cable for this tv and it is very aggravating. Is there anything simple i can do short of beating it up with a hammer?

With a 10 year old set it is most likely time to get rid of it. The only way that I know of getting the tape out is going into the machine and seeing if you can raise the elevator carriage. BE WARNED THOUGH THE CRT TUBE CONTAINS HIGH VOLTAGE. You may want to look into a repair shop, but be warned for the price you pay for the fix you can by a new television and VCR.

The hammer might be a good idea, if its a small TV just go buy another one, you might be able to spend under $300 and get one that has both a DVD and a VCR in it in the 24 inch size. If the TV is bigger than that, you may want to call a repair place and see how much it is to bring it in. Most major cities if they come to you and dont do anything to the tv except look at it, its almost better to have saved that money and bought a new one. But, I digress if it is above 27 look into getting it fixed first if its the board going which is what i suspect then the hammer might be the way to go.

If the tape is something with high sentimental or dollar value, take it to a repair shop to get it extracted. The TV probably isn't worth fixing.

Don't take a hammer to the TV, though. There is a huge charge stored in the capacitors of a TV, enough to injure you severely, EVEN IF YOU UNPLUG THE SET. Also, the picture tube has a strong vacuum in it. Break that, and you'll have large, heavy, sharp pieces of glass, plastic, and metal flying around you, and you will have a strong risk of being hurt by one. A friend and I once broke a picture tube by throwing a big rock at it from about 25 feet away, and one of the pieces almost got us that at that distance.

yeah man, your best choice is to get a new tv and while your waiting for it, entertain yourself by beating the old one with a hammer
