Four leaf clovers are found in all kinds of clover patches, though almost all of the clovers are three-leaved. I have two search tips for you:
1. Try to let your eyes look at patterns while you scan across a patch of clover. A four-leaf clover has a squarish look instead of triangular or asymmetric. I think that it's the center of the four-leaf clover that catches my attention, making that little + or box pattern instead of the three radiating veins. Once you get used to scanning clover patches, they'll just jump out at you.
2. It's my experience that four-leaf clovers often occur in clusters - several in the same patch - while other patches will not have any at all. I know of one patch where I can find about 10 of them on any given day. Go looking with someone who is a good spotter, and then scan the same patch where they find one.
Practice on this picture: http://www.1919studios.com/images/HowMany-FourLeaf.jpg
Good luck!

Growing in the ground. They are somewhat rare. It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.

I would begin my search in a field of clover. Fours are not so difficult to find.
