Where can I donate clothes so they go to the homeless?

Question

I want to donate clothes so they will go to the needy...
I usd to donate them to goodwill/salvation army, but they really only sell those things.
Whenever I call a hospital, nursing home or a red cross, i get turned down becuase my clothing is a size 0-1, and they want size 10+.
Is there a special place where I can just take my things, or should I give stuff to the needy if I see them?

The Best Place to donate clothes is Goodwill, or even Salvation Army. Goodwill will recognize you city wide. The homeless shelter usually accepts clothes but it's not guaranteed. You can also give clothes to churches or anyehere religious.

In addition to the homeless shelter, there are a few places I can think of that take clothes for the homeless.

Try the YWCA (might be listed in the your area as Women's crisis center, Women and Children's alliance).

A shelter for unwed mothers ~ these girls are usually in their teens and can wear these small sizes. Call your local Health & Welfare office to find the location of the shelter nearest you.

Are there any refugee groups in your area? It may take a little work to track the groups down but someone at a local Episcopal church or your State's Food Bank network can probably turn up a contact for you.

The Migrant Council is another great place to check ~ Heath & Welfare should have that info as well.

Some Catholic Churches have volunteers who belong to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. SVdP volunteers visit the homeless, support shelters, and are networked into many other agencies that help the homeless and those living in poverty.

While some thrift stores are "for profit" stores, many use their proceeds to support shelters, food pantries, and provide rent & utility assistance. Your size 0-1 might not go to a homeless person, but the $10 earned from the dress will provide necessary items, including food and clothing, for those is need.

Sigh. For the millionth time, Goodwill and the Salvation military do not supply clothing to the homeless. They sell them and donate the money to homeless courses. you should do it your self. Be secure and convey some secure practices, yet yeah, it truly is an particularly good act of kindness on your section.

You could start with shelters for the homeless, and places that feed the homeless.

the number of steady volunteers you get will influence the number of different places you can be having these bins

if you get more donations than are needed by homeless in your city, branch out to other cities homeless shelters

you come up with a name for your group, get a post office box in the name of the group ... then on the bins, the labeling would include ... if you want to volunteer some time to help us with this project ... it gives name of group, your post office box, perhaps a web site where you post the next time you are going to have a public meeting

In most large cities, you will find an organization dedicated to battered/abused women of domestic violence. Many times, these organizations will have a program aimed at providing their clients modern clothing to use for work interviews. If this doesnt work for you, then you might want to try any other local womens' groups. Again, they should have a program whose mission is to provide nice clothing for women to present a positive appearance while interviewing for a job. It's a tremendously rewarding experience to know you're giving your clothes to someone less fortunate than yourself. even though these places sell these items they dont amke a profit - the one near us gives the proceeds to the childrens orphanage in this city - you could try to give them to a homeless person if you see one - or go to a homeless shelter - there are little kids that can fit in to that size clothing - consider a womans shelter for battered or abused woman - they may have young girls there that wear size 12 in kids and they would be able to fit in to a one

You could try contacting the local YWCA and asking if there is a local women's shelter who could use them. They often need nice clothes for the women to help them get out for job interviews and such. I have also donated toiletries like shampoo and soaps and things (unused, of course).
