Edith once explained to Mike that Archie envied him his education and all the opportunities it gave him. Archie, of course, was the quintessential bigot.

I wonder: Is that a source of bigotry? -- a desperate, hopeless need to know why our lives are crappy, so desperate that any purely invented answer will be hungrily seized upon and used in place of true knowledge? (If you remember, Archie believed -- no, he "knew" some profoundly stupid stuff.)

No need to get real deep and insightful here; I'm winding down for the evening and my mind is wandering.

Hello,

My favourite comedy of the last 35 years!

I like the one where Archie's got to pass grade 11 to get the job a chief stevedor on the docks. Meat head coaches him:

Meat Head - What great American once said the plight of the American indian has been a national disgrace? (Kennedy said it)

Archie - Geronimo!

Meat Head and Archie fight over this as Archie sees the history of the American West through the eyes of John Wayne.

At length Archie goes to write the exam and goes to work the next morning.

In the evening he returns and throws himself down on the dinner chair.

Archie - Meat Head, just shut up and pass the butter!

Meathead - Geez Achie, what's wrong with you? I got good news... takled to your teacher today and he said you past your history and grade 11 with flying colors!

Archie - Awwwwwwwwww no thanks to you Meathead. You should have damn well taught me the theory of relativity!

Meathead - But Archie, that is hard! It's Einstein's theory of space and time; if you'd accept my Jewish friend Bernstein , he good in physics and........

Archie - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh shut up you dummy! I mean that the son-in-law of the manager got the job!

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

This is part of it, your explanation of the source of racial bigotry. Add family, church, school influences, the crowd you hang out in, ignorance (you know African Africans on the idiot box or in flight or at a distance), and your genes.

Of course I remember All in the Family. I worked it twice as an actor. Carroll was a sweetheart off-camera, a chap of Irish ancestry who was known to bend an elbow, speak in absurd brogue, and sneak up behind a woman and put a hand where a hand should not be.

Don't know, but I do remember when Archie got locked in the basement, drank a bottle of wine and tried to write out his "last will and 'tentacle' " while wasted.

But really, bigotry stems from ignorance. And that is what Archie was, wasn't it? Ignorant buffoon. That was the whole point of the show....to point out the stupidity of ignorance.

LOL. Amazing how you drew such insight from ol' Archie. Those circumstances could certainly be a cause of bigotry. It all stems from a lack of intelligence. Good call! :)

I love all in the family and I remember that episode. You just had to love Archie even though he was an ***.

Sorry Midge, Mike was a Meathead, not Meatball.

Ignorance is the root of all bigotry.
