Disbelief in general is looked down upon.

Apostasy from the true belief is not always the worst type of disbelief but its seen as ugly to disbelieve after having believed in the true belief.

Because it explicitly implies that the people using the term have been judged to be in error by the apostate. Religious people who use the term "apostate" generally don't take kindly to people who reject their opinions.
I think it interesting that Muslims who apostasize are supposed to be executed. There was a case in Afghanistan of a man who converted to christianity who was going to be executed until the U.S. applied pressure and the Afghan government backed off.

Depends on what you apostasize from. lol The Jehovah's Witnesses consider me an apostate because I left them as soon as I was old enough to get out from under my parents' roof. Now I have my own ministry to people who want to break out of the cults. In this sense, I am PROUD to be an apostate!!!!
