Treat the weapon as a piece of yourself. Fos stance, hold the bo with both hands; on fist should face up, the other should face down. Your legs should be bent, and the front leg should be facing foreward. hold the po with one end facing foreward.

Keep your hands about 1 1/2 feet apart. Make sure the bo is only as high as your shoulder, no smaller.

KEEP BOTH HANDS ON THE BO AT ALL TIMES IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY!!!
I have seen rookies try to swing it with one arm, and they either hit themselves, or hit someone else. When striking a target with the bo, slide your hands( do not take your hands off of it) to one side, step towards the target, and swing only hard enough to hit the target: you are only demonstrating. Don't swing with power, but step with power, as this makes your blow seem harder (of course, if you are fighting, you should swing hard).

Stance and consitincy is everything when demonstrating your skill. Even if you mess up, do not stop or change; just keep going as if you never messed up.

If the choice of weapon is up to you and a Bo is not mandatory, then my advice to you is to learn how to use the tonfa instead. It's a lot easier as most of the tonfa techniques are compatible with your empty hand kata forms. Think about it, the punches, elbow strikes and blocks can be done with a tonfa in hand. You only need to learn how to manipulate the tonfa grip to change the position of the shaft. It's easier to adjust to learning this weapon than to learn a completely new set of skill with a Bo.
