We are looking to purchase a new home, and one house we found has gorgeous wallpapering in it. While I love it, I don't want the house to look totally dated by the presence of the wallpaper! Is it possible that it is a "newish" thing, rather than just old?? It looks like the paper itself is in perfect condition--perhaps recently hung. I realize it's ultimately up to us--what we like or don't like--of course, but would like the opinion of others. I wouldn't want our beautiful new home to look SILLY! Many thanks!

Wallpaper IS making a comeback of sorts, but it never really " left the building". You can still find traditional patterns, florals, kiddie prints, and borders, as there is always a market for what consumers have become used to. But what you will see now in wallcoverings, are more natural, faux finish looks such as linen looks, stone, marble, fabric, etc, that have more of a textured look than an obvious pattern. Grass cloth, both faux or real, is coming back to compliment the reintroduction of woven wood blinds which were also considered passe.
Borders, which were done to death, should be avoided. But there are cut borders, ( instead of even edged strip borders ) that can be used, especially in older homes or restorations.
When using wallcoverings, try to use patterns or textures in keeping with the age of your home. ( Victorian roses wouldn't fly in an open concept, ultra modern home.) Wallpaper "murals" are still considered hideous as they were done to death also in the 80's.
Textured, paintable wallcoverings are popular also. When applied, they can give you a variety of subtle textures such as fine stipple to a rough trowelled look. You then can paint over with any colour you choose.
Textured paints ( colour-in ) are also an alternative to textured wallpapers. When chipped or damaged, it won't show white as the colour is mixed through.
There are really no rules in design. Any wallcovering will work if you are sensitive in working it's colours or pattern into the rest of your room's decor. Don't rip off good wallpaper because someone says it's dated. I dare them to go to any high end hotel that doesn't use wallcoverings in their rooms or common areas.. Just be careful that what you choose is in balance and not overpowering in colour, pattern or texture, with the other elements in your room.

It is the old style wallpaper that went out of style. It was thick and always looked like it was peeling off the wall and came in tacky designs. Now wallpaper (or wall covering as it is now advertised) is not thick, does not require paste to install and comes in beautiful designs. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish some wall coverings from custom paint jobs. Murals and borders are popular also. It is a matter of taste but I can tell you that some very exclusive model homes are decorated with some very expensive wall covering and it always looks beautiful and up to date. If you think it is gorgeous, others probably will too.

Styles come and go. Wallpaper was out for the last 5 - 6 years. Today it is starting a come back. If you like it, enjoy it, you are at the head of a coming tread

As long as you like the wallpaper and it is in good shape--keep it. After all, a lot of the paint treatments MIMIC wallpaper.
