First and foremost, I DO NOT believe in 'colicky' babies. Babies don't come out just crying for no reason. They cry because they need something and that is the only way they can communicate with you right now.

As far as breastfeeding, what does your diet consist of? Do you eat a lot of salads and veggies? Remember whatever you eat, he's eating too. Bland your diet down some...grilled chicken, rice, peas. Also increase your water intake, drinking decaf chamomile teas, and of course no caffeines.

He may have a slight case of acid reflux as well. Especially if he's okay with sleeping upright. You can place an old phone book under his mattress to let him sleep with his head at a slight incline.

My daughter was never really a burper. I only did it when it sounded like she needed it. I could hear the rumbling in her belly or if my let-down had her doing a lot of gulping. Just give him a few rubs.

One funny thing I noticed with my little girl, when I was anxious to put her down or thinking she would wake up...she always did. Just think positively and relax with him. It may take a week of you holding him during his naps to help him establish a sleep pattern. In a couple of months, you'll be wanting to hold him tight and he's gonna look right past you to the toys on the floor!

Just be patient with him and respond to his cues. Hold him while he needs it. You two will get the hang of each other. I promise!

All of the above answers are great, by the way. I had two of "these sweet high need babies". I am telling you, I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!! Dr. Harvy Karp combines a lot of what everyone does into an easy method that I wish I knew about 11 years ago, but used on my third. Go to http://www.thehappiestbaby.com/ and consider getting some of the stuff...or amazon.com. I was a newborn nursery nurse for 10 years before my first and nothing I tried helped. I burned out an industrial fan's & a vacumm's motor with my third until I found the CD. Good luck....Dr. William Sears says a high need baby menas a VERY intelligent child! P.S. I tried many on-the-body-infant carriers and loved the "New Native" swing. http://www.newnativebaby.com/ I used it til she was 26 poulnds!

talk to your doctor about it, they usually have some pretty good ideas that most of the time you wouldn't think of. i don't know if they work for your baby but my pediatrician told me not to waste my money on the drops that they don't really work. try putting luke warm water in a 4 oz. bottle and then drop in a mint candy( the round red & white stripped ones) let it dissolve a little until the water is a light pink color and give it to your baby. it worked great when my son had gas on his stomache and my pediatrician gave me the idea ( also a lot cheaper than the drops).

try playing soft music for your baby when you lay him down to sleep, it will help soothe them to sleep.

when i couldn't get my son to burp for me i would lay him across my lap and lightly bounce my legs up and down while i patted his back. it was a sure thing everytime, and if he was tired it would help him fall asleep too.

I have an 8 week old and a 3 yr. old. My 3 yr. old slept through the night right from the beginning, then I had my daughter, and I was in for a shock! Your son sounds like my daughter, He probably is awake so much because of gas, try different ways to burp him. I cannot get my daughter to burp for anything, but hand her to my husband and she burps withing like 30 sec, tops. It something weired about the way he holds her and pats her back. So just keep trying till something works.
I know its hard but hang in their, it will get better. (One trick that does sometimes work for me is to lay her on her back for about 10-20 sec. then set her up, and out it comes)

That sounds perfectly normal to me! It's a good thing he is eating constantly. Wow 5 hours at a time, just consider that a lucky break, most babies this age will do about 3 maybe 4 hours at a time. In time they will sleep longer stretches (not mine 9 months only 2 hour stretches). They will go threw many many growth spurts the first few years of life. His constantly noises and moving is perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry too much your baby sounds like he is a normal newborn to me.

try mylicon drops for the gas and burping really good(if hes gassy like that you should get 1 or 2 "good" ones) also if he sleeps in the car you may try putting a running vacuum close to the swing(the noise and motion in combination may help) good luck it'll get better

When my now 5 1/2 month old son was around 1 month, he stopped taking naps during the day and would sleep only about 7-8 hours at night. His dr said it was normal for some babies, they are just so amazed by their surroundings as they are getting older, over stimulated and wondering about the world. Hang in there, it does get better. He now sleeps for around 10 hours at night and takes three naps during the day!!!!!

You may want to try a chair or cradle with built in vibration. Since your baby likes falling asleep in the car, this may do the trick. Fisher-Price has quite a few models that are reasonably priced. Some even play music while they vibrate your child to sleep. We swaddle our daughter and then place her in her papasan and it usually does the trick.

That sounds like it might be Colic or some other Gastro-intestinal problem, though it's probably just minor. Instead of writing all this down for us here in the peanut gallery, I would say that you make a list of noticeable symptoms over the next day or so, see if they fluctuate, and...if they're constant, I would take Baby to see the Pediatrician.

Don't stress, though! Babies tend to have a lot of little health hiccups! The last thing he needs is to know that his mommy is worried.
