it's my first time on a plane and i'm a little nervous about airport security. i know they have a rule about having only 3 oz. of liquid in your carry on. i was just wondering if it would be okay to have my liquid foundation in my purse even if my purse isn't going in my carry on bag. it has metal on it so i figured it would set off alarms.

You are going to have to send all your metal things through the Xray machine or end up standing with your arms out looking foolish while they pass the Wand over your bod. here is the rule and the web site for carry on information.

check everything that you don't need. Most drug stores like Savon or Rite aid have travel size toiletries. use those and if they confiscate them no big deal. However; here is the rule.

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure.
Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.

Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.

3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.

here is the web site if you need more info.

This is a good site. They show pictures of how to pack etc and have much more info than I included here. Check it out.

I work for TSA, so I can give you any details that you need. Like someone else said, all of your property will go through an X-ray machine anyways, and we see plenty of metal things in a day. Not that most people do this, but just don't have any weapons, pepper spray, lighters in your carry-ons, as these are prohibited. But metal things such as keys, cell phones, etc., are all fine, just not in your pockets, or you will alarm the metal detector. As for the liquids in your checked baggage, there is not a limit. As for carry-ons, the 3-1-1 rule is great to remember, but the technicality on it is that the CONTAINER SIZE has to be 3.4 oz or smaller. So you can't take a 12oz bottle of shampoo that only has a little left in it. We go by the container size. A lot of people (a lot, on a daily basis) are confused by this. If you have ANY other questions, please feel free to email, I'd be glad to help!

Traveler is correct on all things but here is the best website to go to.

tsa.gov

It has everything you need to know about security and what can and cannot be brought.
