yes, maybe some people uses someones death as an alibi just to skip or be exempted from work or from school
but i also beleive that death is a valid reason for some who are really affected emotionally by someones death
when my father died in 2002, i didnt skip work, but my work if very much affected, maybe its better that i didnt work for maybe one or two weeks
people have emotions , someones death maybe a valid reason to be absent from any activity

It is wrong if you do it just to get out of work, and have no plans to go to the funeral or were in no way close to the person that passed. You said excuse, not reason, so i assume you told your employer you would not be in to work because so and so passed away. If this persons death did not affect you, than yes it is wrong. If you don't want to go to work, than don't, but don't use someones death as an excuse not to go if you were not close to them.

There are some people that go out to people's funerals whom they don't know or have never met. I worked with a man who had that as his hobby. He and his wife would do it several times a week. Sort of a Harold and Maude thing. They showed up at the funeral home to visit my father-in-law at the funeral home and they did not know him. No, it wasn't for the wake. I suppose if it was your own death it would be an acceptable reason ... unless you showed up on Friday for the last check.

No it is not wrong. Someone's death has a serious impact on that person, and its a legitimate excuse to leave work. I don't care if a distant relative or friend or a close family member. We all deal with loss in different ways and people should respect the diversity in which we express our grief or loss!!!

Yes it is wrong. I don't mind skipping work for no good reason, but I would never claim that someone just died when he / she had died a while back or was not dead.

Yes. It's dishonest and an insult to the dead person's memory. If you need a creative excuse to get out of work, try the usual, sick, family emergency or doctor's appointment.

Yes. This would be lying and deceitful. You could get into a lot of trouble if you get caught. What if you are asked for a copy of the obituary or a notice/letter from the funeral director? What would you do then?
It's a bit pathetic to use a death to get off from work.

no, just make sure the person is already dead. I have found through experience that if I said my kid was sick and he wasn't he got sick..so if you say someone alive is dead..watch out..he might die. so make sure they are already dead.

It's not wrong to skip work if someone really did die.
