You are more likely going to find full grown dogs in an animal shelter. If you are looking for a specific breed, you can browse online for the specific breed and buy a puppy from a litter. We bought our two labs from local breeders, and we found them both by searching for "lab puppies" online.

animal shelter first - those dogs are unfortunately available for a limited time regardless of age. Then a pet shop - personally I prefer a mixed breed breeder (cheaper dogs with better tempermant and quality dog care)
Just a note: be careful about internet pictures on animal shelters, most of the time they aren't updated even when they say the pictures are recent.
Another Note:
Watch your dog carefully for the first few months. The doctor may not be able to find notable signs of illness soon after your puppy's move (and it may be the change of enviroment that causes it - just like sometimes we get sick while our body adjusts to a long stay in a hotel room) Undiagnosed illness can be fatal to your puppy (I lost one dog and almost lost another because of it)
And, the animal shelter is the absolute BEST place to go, most of the absolutely adorable and loyal puppies end up there -plus many shelter puppies are already nuetered, vaccs, and partially trained. I bought 2 for 5 dollars a piece from the litter of a purebred mother.

Your local Humane Society or ASPCA is the best place to find a dog since they rescue dogs in need and they only put up good dogs for adoption. If they are not sociable and such they will euthanize them. Most pet shops are reliable but pricey. The dog pound and/or animal shelter is the Humane Society or ASPCA. These animals will not be put up for adoption unless the workers there believe that they will make a good pet. You will have to pay to have them spayed or neutered and you never know what you might find there. Most of them usually have puppies and adults.

I'm glad that you know not to buy a puppy from the mall. Pet shops are also bad ideas. Both places over price their animals and they are not always healthy. Over 90% of the time they are bought from puppy mills that are ran by people strictly trying to make money off of overbreeding their pets and keeping them in small kennels.
Shelters and pounds are great places to go. They have tons of puppies as well as pure breds and almost anything else you are looking for. If you want to keep your vet bills down, I reccommend looking for a medium sized mixed breed dog because they are more likely to have breed out any health issues related to a specific breed.
Good luck finding your new best friend. I'm sure you'll know the right one when you meet them.

a pet shop is a definately no no unless they're having an adoption fair. Petsmart, Petco, and PetFood Express does this usually on a saturday or sunday.
it might take more time to get a puppy at a humane society or a pound cause a lot of people get a younger dog rather than a older dog.
first go visit your local humane society and walk around there. they have tours depending on the place. some dogs are being fostered at another place, so checking out the humane society's website might be great.
checking petfinder.com is great also.

unless you want to breed dogs go to an animal shelter or a dog pound. The sight of all those dogs stuck in cages will melt you heart. and you will be doing a good deed by saving a dog from...well you know that shelters can't keep dogs indefinitely.
We got our dog from the ASPCA in Texas...and we are so glad. He has brought nothing but joy to our hearts. The thought of the alternative if we had not adopted him makes us wish we could find homes for all shelter pets.

Go to your local animal shelter to search for a pet. An adopted pet is the best, because they will remember that you saved them. You can also try www.petfinders.com, which lists all types of pets in all areas of the country. There are sometimes fees that go along with adoption. But this is to assist in caring for the animals while they are being fostered or at the shelters. Please adopt and don't buy. Good Luck!

First of all, do you know what type of dog you want. Large, small, guard dog or pet?? There are some excellent websites with descriptions of dog breeds on them. Please take into consideration how much time you are prepared to spend with the dog, who will look after it when you are on holiday or out at work. Are you prepared to exercise it? Once you have answered all of those questions, I suggest that you go to the pound, tell them what you are looking for and wait for something fitting your description comes in. Don't be tempted to buy the cutest looking puppy at the door, it's not what YOU really want.

go to a shelter or a dog pound! give a dog a home that might have been a stray, abandoned, or that had to go there because its owners couldn't keep him or her.
Pet shops have puppies too but i think that it would be much more $$$
Also some people's dogs might have puppies that they sell or give away. I got my dog from a family whose dog had puppies for like $200 or something, i forget.
Anyway good luck! and remember, there is no such thing as a free puppy.

A local pet store is sometimes good. If its a nice pet store. PetsMart sometimes have puppies for sale. And of course a saving a dog from a shelter is always good. Dog pounds are sometimes awful they don't always take care of the dogs and are sometimes in bad condition. You can always look in local newspapers people are always selling and giving away puppies.
