My son who is 14 is a keen runner for the local Athletic club, he keeps getting knee problems. We have checked to make sure he has the correct supportive trainers etc. Someone told me to try Glucosamine, Chondroitin as this is for this type of injury, has anyone had such problems and taken this which worked?

He runs on varity of grounds mainly a running track during summer and cross country during winter. He has very good supportive trainers which cost a small fortune!

Glucosamine combined with chondroitin is normally recommended for arthritis but your son's problem sounds like knee injuries from running and not arthritis.

Perhaps he runs on bitumen or concrete or other hard surfaces which is bad for your knees and ankles. Running on soft surfaces such as grass is much better. Does he run with good running shoes to absorb the thumping and pounding action from running?

Perhaps a chiropractor might be able to help. They know how to deal with dislocated knee problems. Dislocated knees might be the problem that needs to be treated here and not arthritis.

I have had knee problems for the past 15 years, nothing would work they just kept on hurting. In the end my Doctor sent me to get Xrays to see what was going on inside, they were riddled with Arthritis and wear and tear from an earlier life of running every day. The knees are the body's shock absorbers, they must be treated right, it sounds to me as if all the running is doing this to your son and its not agreeing with him. I would get this checked out by a Specialist and soon before your lad really hurts himself. I went through hell with the pain and have not long had a total knee replacement , and will soon have the other one done.

This answer is probably totally irrelevant but I'll give it anyway.
I give glucosamine tablets to my 2 dogs, the largest dog had started walking with a limp and rather than go to the vet for medication he would probably need for the rest of his life I tried him with 1000mg of glucosamine a day. It took a couple of weeks to work but he now walks without any limping at all, the difference is amazing. So if it can work for a dog maybe it can work for a human?

hey, glucosamine is a supplement used to rebuild the building blocks of the joint, it helps to heal the damaging affects of running on hard surface. maybe trying training on a softer surface such as sand or a dirt trail would be better on his knees, good luck to your son

please check his footwear. At 14 he is still growing and may need a new pair of running shoes. Make sure they are "running shoes" the ones with gel in the sole help ease the shock to the body as the foot hits the ground.

They do work but if he is diabetic check with his doctor as Glucosamine may affect his levels.
