I've never had it happen to me during the war, but I am from Philadelphia and had a glock put to my mouth a couple times from some high school kids who tried to mug me and the two other kids I walked home with back when I was in Junior High. I was a little scared back than but I didn't realize how close I would have been to dying.
I would probably be much more scared now if the same thing happened to me in the desert. It's ok to be scared, but the trick comes into managing your fear when you are under pressure.

Can't say that I have. I have been shot at from close range. I still remember being totally focused on the barrel at the time and how big it appeared. He got two shots off but not that all-important third. At the time, I was too busy to be scared. That showed up the next day. If you have a gun in your mouth, I would say that it is normal to be very scared. As to the bravery aspect, you sometimes have to size up the situation. Some bad guys want fear and some respect bravery. Just hope that you do not choose the wrong one. You obviously chose correctly.

well, not in my mouth, but i stood down a shotgun barrel in my face. my friend's house had been burglarized (which i walked in on, as well.... dumb luck, huh?) and their family got scared, so they bought a shotgun. i was sleeping over, heard a noise, and got up to see what it was, and walked out of the room i was sleeping in, to a shotgun barrel, pointed at my nose. i've been mugged, raped, and beaten up, and this was perhaps the most frightened i have been in my life. i stayed very calm, and very quietly said that i was me. that was enough for my friend's husband to lower the gun. he then went to check the windows, and found that one had been forced.
being scared and being brave are not mutually exclusive. i was both, scared and brave at the same time. had i not, i wouldn't be alive today. if you mean, is it better to not think, but to just react, that's rarely a good move. however, it's an idea to practice how to behave in emergencies, so that you can act appropriately.

Yes I have, by an ex boyfriend. And it was just like you said. I was scared. Hella scared but I diddn't act like it because I diddn't want to give him what he was looking for. Some kind of power trip. I just acted like I diddn't give a sh*t and that seemed to piss him off more. So he took the gun out of my mouth and hit me in the head with it and that was that. I was in the prosess of leaving him and that was a last resort kind of thing I guess. WOW, I havn't thought about that in awhile.

No but I've had one up against my temple while the sicko told me he was going to blow my brains out and then cut off my nose. I don't like the word "normal". I would say scared (terrified!) is the average response, though. It was in my case; my brain isn't wired to fight back and probably have my brains blown out for the effort (just in case the sicko wasn't really planning on following through if I just did whatever he told me to). I just wanted to live through it which I'm glad to say I did. I'm glad you did too.
PS (I'm also glad I knew who he was and that I had "big brothers" I could call on to avenge me. Boy, did they ever.)

Only idiots are not scared in those positions. Anyone that has no fear in a situation like that is insane or has a death wish (or both) Either way, you're not safe with them.
Courage means being afraid...but doing what you know has to be done in SPITE of it.

No ...but up against the base of my skull.
I had hidden my money in my sock...just in case.
But you know what? When he demanded my money..I didn't even bother with my pockets... I just pulled the money right out of my sock!
Was I scared??
Let's just say he's lucky the money was in my sock...and not in my pocket!
