I have a 4 year old female weimaraner and just recently, as I was petting her, I found out the bottom of her ears were very swollen. Yes, they do feel warm and seem red (hard to tell however). I've checked all the sites and the only things I found were allergic reactions, bug bites, and aural hematomas. Both of her ears are swollen, so it is only an allergic reaction that seems possible. She hasn't had this before and we've never had a dog in this situation. So can anyone possibly give another diagnosis or some tips to reduce the swelling (I think my dad will put a cold compress on her soon). We can't take her to her vet yet, so it would be great if anyone could help.
Thanks.

She hasn't been swimming at all. Last time she did was a few weeks ago. We just got her back Monday from the Vet after we came back from our vacation. The closest she has been to swimming was the bath she took Monday. And my sister put on this spray we usually put on our dog, but this has never ever happened after we have. Thank you so much for all the stuff you guys :D I'm looking for an open vet right now since our's has already closed.

Weimaraners have floppy ears. This puts them at risk or many ear infections. Your dog probably has a severe ear infection that spread from one ear to the other. I'd suggest getting to your vet, who can give you some medication that goes right in the dog's ear and clears the infection up fast. To prevent future infections you can get an ear cleaning liquid and use it about once a week.

If they feel squishy like a pillow or water balloon, then yes they are hematomas. A blood vessel breaks in the ear and pushed the inside and outside flaps apart. You can't do anything at home. Not life threatening, but definitely uncomfortable. Sometimes the whole ear becomes swollen. Surgery is needed to fix them. They are common in Weimaraners--we just did surgery on one 2 weeks ago!

When you say bottom of the ear, do you mean ear tip, or close to the head?-- If swollen starting at ear tips, could be hematoma. I have seen dogs have them in both ears, although usually in just one. Usually the result of dog shaking her head due to ear infections or ear mites. The head shaking damages the connective tissue in the ear allowing it to fill with fluid. The vet can drain it and perscribe antibiotics. If it is indeed an allergic reaction, Benedryl can be used, but you should really consult a vet first.

You can actually try using Preparation H on her ears or witch hazel to keep the swelling down. Does she swim at all or stick her head in puddles? She could have a yeast infection in her ears. My dogs ears get swollen and red and she tries sticking her feet in them all the time. The vet said she's prone to yeast infections in her ears because she swims a lot and dogs ears don't drain like humans. We were instructed to put Vagisil in her ears.

I would try the Prep H first though.

If she's been shaking her head at all, then aural haematomas ARE possible from the impact of the ear tips hitting the skull. I've seen this happen. These can only be fixed surgically.

At any rate, I'd have it looked at by the vet.

If shes never had this condition before and its not reoccurring it is most likely a symptom to a cold or flu that she's experiencing. My advice is to put on a cold compress and wait and see if the swelling decreases. But make sure as soon as you can to bring her to the vet for a proper examination.

I have a goldie who had one flap swollen and tender--turned out to be a hematoma from flapping her ears. She needed surgery but is fine today.

I would guess that they are hematomas. They are usually caused by a dog shaking its head like crazy. My dog has had them before. If they get really bad, they can break open and will spray blood everywhere. They typically feel like little lumps at the ends of the ear leather. A cold compress should make them feel better. Hope she gets better soon!

I just went through the same thing with my Lab. She had been stung or bitten by something. Took her to the vet and he gave her a steroid shot and some antibiotics.
