A lot of them hail moments of weakness as being prime opportunities for discovering God. This fits in nicely with Christ's teachings of humility and so on.

Weakness is a virtue... except when they're challenged.

Teaching by example does not mean going on about Jesus when you help another person. And if that's your only reason for helping, the feelings behind your actions are illegitimate...

I think you're looking at pastoral counseling with a strong anti-religious bias.

The church exists because they believe they have a true message. It is very difficult to comfort a grieving person without there being some elements of one's religious beliefs.

There are blatantly abusive people who will take advantage of people, but they exist in many if not all of the world's religions (including Atheism, I suppose.)

Hello Chippy v1.0.0.3b.. :)

If someone is dying and has no more hope..than why not give them encouragement, so they will not fear their last moments here on earth..if Christians are right, then I will see them once more..if you are right, at least they had peace when they died.. :)

I share what God has done in my life, to all that ask..I know He can deliver someone from drug addiction..How God can use others to bless you with a SUV free of charge.. :)

How God can heal your precious child, who the doctors had given up on..

You may think it is pathetic..but I think it is empathic..to help others when all hope seems lost..

I say this in Love.. :)

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

They may see it as a way to give comfort. I can't imagine, but I guess it happens, a true Christian 'taking advantage' of a grieving person.

I'm sorry you see it that way, but I see something like "Do not despair for your loved one. He has been called by God into the Kingdom. In your grieving period be still and know that though you may feel empty that the love of God is with you and sustaining you" as an example of human love, and not of common trickery.

By itself, that's a pretty cynical take on things. Many Christians do so in an attempt to comfort.

However, given your posting history, it's obvious you have a deep hate for Christians and this is just one more way of expressing it.

You really need to get a life.

Shameless, yes, but also selfish; they should be thinking of the person they're trying to comfort, not looking for a convert. I have encountered, at various times, guides on effective "witnessing" which point out prime targets and situations.
And yet they have the gall to claim moral superiority.

Umm...I don't think Christians go around looking for people in these situations so that they can preach to them. Generally, they've either been preaching to those people their whole life and are hoping that the person will finally accept, or else the person that's grieving (or someone close to them/related to them) approaches the Christian and asks them to speak to the person.

Yes very pathetic. Those same Christians also probably passed up giving a ride to a mother walking along the road with her young kids.

Friend, you misunderstood it all.
They don't take advantage of people's sufferings, they try to rescue them from the sufferings. The issue is that people in bad situations are the ones more likely to listen to the message. People who feel alright always think they don't need anything else to make them succeed. That's the fatal mistake: they need help as much as the ones who are suffering.
This is the reason why most people who become believers come from hard times.

Not all Christians do so, but I agree -- when it happens, it's disgusting.

I've mostly seen this happen at funerals, actually, where the priest/minister takes the opportunity to pitch Christianity to the mourners -- even in cases where they've been told that the deceased was NOT a Christian and would not have appreciated a Christian funeral address. My husband almost socked a certain minister on the nose when the minister did it at my brother-in-law's funeral (my brother-in-law was actively anti-Christian and to go preaching at his memorial was as good as a slap in the face to his memory).
