Whenever, I unwrap the leaves from iceberg/butter lettuce, the leaves always break, so my lettuce cups turn into lettuce strips instead (which is ok for home dinner, but not ok for entertaining).

I am a chef and believe me this works well..........Hold the head of lettuce in both hands with the root end toward the counter. Smack it hard right on the root endd and the core will come right out, leaving you with nice leaves.

How To Cut Iceberg Lettuce

Ice berg lettuce is not very good for lettuce cups or wraps. Try romain or other leafy lettuce. You'll have a better result.

Otherwise, if you insist on using iceberg, then be extremely gentle when pulling it apart and use a knife only at the tip of the iceberg to break the leaf apart from the bulb.

Well you need to remove the core to have nice lettuce cups. Take hold of the lettuce head and with the core side down slam it on the counter - then pop out the core. Now leafing the lettuce will be a breeze because all the leafs are no longer connected and the head is looser.

Chill the lettuce first in a bowl of ice water for 10 minutes. Turn head over and cut out entire stem with a long enough knife to get about 3 inches in. Remove stem and the outer leaves will remove easily.

Not really, preferably organic bananas are better as the normally grown ones are picked green dunked in chemical solutions. Ice burg lettuce? NO. It has no nutritional value whatsoever & all water, so, even though birds love lettuce it just gives them diahroea which is really bad for them. All other lettuces like red lettuce, asian lettuces etc are really good for them. A a general rule, the pale watery looking green veg are usually not the best because they have no nutrition in them. The richer the green colour, the better for them.

"A cockatiel diet must be supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. An all seed diet often results in an unhealthy or overweight cockatiel. Try the following: FRUIT: apple, grape, guava, kiwi fruit, mango, melon, nectarine, orange, peach, pear, pomegranate, plum, strawberry, tangerine, watermelon VEGETABLES: bok choy, broccoli, carrot (chopped or grated), celery, chard, lettuce (but small amounts of lettuce and not too often as not a lot of goodness), peas, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn, watercress, zucchini. Favorites with cockatiels tend to be apple, egg, pasta, peas, rice, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn. Note that the fruit and vegetables should be provided: thoroughly washed in small pieces at room temperature unpeeled free of cores, stones, pits or pips raw (some cockatiels prefer certain vegetables cooked eg peas and sweetcorn - use your judgment here) fresh (obviously this will be the most nutritious for your cockatiel but you can use frozen or canned) Be aware that your cockatiel's droppings may be runnier than usual with an intake of fruit and vegetables. " Some of the books I have mention that banana peels are ok too, but in moderation.

Cut or tear out the core, and then rinse them upside down while you break away the leaves.

Cut the leaf from the stem first, then work your fingers down spreading them as you go.
