I think the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook is the best all around one. The one with the red and white checkered cover. I received one for a wedding present in 1964 and it was my bible in the kitchen! It was much more helpful than the Betty Crocker cookbook or any of the dozen or so others I received. It's chock full of great recipes, but what I found most helpful as a new cook were all the tips, techniques and explanation of cooking terms. It has lots of great pictures, too!

Any of the books put out by the CIA (http://www.ciachef.edu/enthusiasts/cookbooks/) will be beautifully written, well illustrated and have clear instructions. You can start with "Cooking at Home with the Culinary Institute of America" it has some great classic foods that you may remember and some new twists on old stand bys this book is already loosing it's binding on my shelf. I also really like the classic red Better Homes and Gardens cookbook - simple home-style foods that are so familiar they are always a hit. Enjoy!

Cooks Illustrated magazine also has a TV show called Americas Test Kitchen on PBS, they sell there own books as well as the magazines. They take common recipes and make them as much as 30 times until they come up with the perfect recipe so everything is about as good as it gets. They also take things that most home cooks avoid making because its too difficult and they find ways to make it easier so you can make it. I actually dont have any of there books because I signed up online and I can download any recipes I want for a small cost.
