I have an air rifle and I am thinking about getting a crossbow I want to know if I can shoot rabbits on common land as farmers herd there cows there I don't know the rules but if anyone does I live in the uk so if you know about the by laws i'd appreciate it.

I have just phoned the police and I know that I need to use it on private land etc but I don't know if I can use it in my garden shooting at targets etc ?

You can use a non fac air weapon in your garden however you must be away from the public highway, public footpaths and bridal ways. The projectile IE the pellet must not leave your boundary.
The laws in the UK for armed trespass are very strict and carry a severe prison sentence.

no sorry u cant u can only shoot on private land with the farmers permission

you cannot discharge a weapon in any public place .common land is a public place,it has to be on private property
