I'm a Korean student who has been in the u.s.a for about 10 months. There is something I wanna make sure.

I'm just curious about the speed limit in America.

Am I gotten a ticket by police officer if I gather Speed "38 or

39 miles" over on the road where the sign "speed limit

35miles" locates? What about in a school zone?

I mustn't exceed speed limit just a couple of miles anytime anywhere??????? or it is really ok?

Please some specialists answer my question....

thanks for reading.

Which state? Which county? Please remember the USA is 50 States United ... but this means that each State has different laws. Further, each state is broken up into county's; which have different laws united under the state and federal laws. It's not like Korea where you will find a separation between South & North Korea ... instead you'll happily, unaware move from County "A" to County "B" without knowledge. Sometimes you'll see signs that give you different "State's" but not always.

Colorado has the "Keep up with traffic" laws. This means during mega snow storms if everyone is driving 10 mph in a 35 mph zone, you're speeding at 39 mph! It also means if you're on the Interstate with a 70 mph rate and everyone is going 90 mph then you can get a ticket for driving at 70 mph.

Generally, in most parts of the US, the police wont pull you over unless youre going five miles or more over the posted speed limit. School zones, however, you should definitely do the posted limit! That's usually 15 mph when kids are present, but some areas have it at 10 mph now. And honestly, most everyone speeds a little bit until they see a cop car.
Best advice I could give: drive what youre comfortable driving. If you only want to do the speed limit, just do the speed limit. If you're okay with going that extra two or three mph, no one will really notice.

The speed limit is the maximum speed you can go in that area. If the posted speed limit is 35mph and you were caught going 39mph, you were technically speeding as the MAXIMUM speed allowed was 35mph.

A school zone is almost always 25mph when school is in session. If there are no children present, then whatever limit is posted is the speed you should be going. However, this can vary from state to state, so you could pick up a driver's handbook from your local driver's license center to check what's legal.

Some cops can choose to give you a break if you're going somewhat over the speed limit, but it's completely up to the police officer. They're in their right to give you a ticket if you are going over the posted speed limit - even if it's just 36mph in a 35mph zone.

It really depends on where you are. In California, you will get killed if you go the speed limit. 75 in the slow lane is the norm. The fast lane is usually 85-90 MPH. School zones are 25 or less. There's no tolerance for going faster in a school zone no matter where you are.

General rule is about 5 over the speed limit and you should be ok.

I just love the ppl spewing statistics. You can get whatever statics you want arguing either side, but the reality of it is do you want anyone else telling you what you can and can't own? I've owned a gun for years and I have NEVER been destructive with it. I went through a nasty divorce with guns in the house, never shot anybody. As far as the "biker guy" in the other post, who's to say if he didn't have the gun he wouldn't have shoved her, she hit her temple and died. If I hadn't have owned any chairs for her to crack her head on, she'd still be alive. We should outlaw chairs. I don't want my government telling me I can't have a gun because a LOT of criminals aren't responsible. Go check and see how many deaths there are with REGISTERED weapons. Watch getting the stats from anti-gunner sites too, they figure in suicides and accidental shootings.

Likely to just get a warnng, but a ticket is possible. Be especially careful in school zones. There should be a lower speed limit posted there.

Don't take any chances. Just don't go any faster than the posted limits.

If you're one or two MPH over the speed limit, the cops won't mind. You should do your best to drive within a reasonable range of the speed limit, but you shouldn't focus all of your attention on keeping your speed at exactly the speed limit, or else you'll end up in a ditch. You should focus most of your attention on the road. Your speed will fluctuate naturally, especially when you are driving up and down hills. If you are a few miles over the speed limit while going down a hill, don't put your foot on the brake, just take it off the gas.

well, get a radar detector like a passport escort x50, and when that goes off, slow down to the speed that the little signs on the sign on the side of the road say to go. When that stops beeping, go fast again. Simple.
