Sounds like a bad ground on the negative cable. You may have had some arcing going on and that is what melted the cable. If it was the starter hanging, then you may want to get another one installed. There could be some burrs on the flywheel and it hung up or a bad bendix gear. good luck.

If it was fine until you changed the solenoid, you either got a defective one or wired it wrong. Battery cable and all small wires go to one side, the starter cable goes to the other side. And the little right angled wire to the s terimal in the middle. Wire it like that, replace the melted ground cable and retry. Should be ok unless the solenoid is bad.

When it hung it still had juice going through it and none of it was being use that is what melted you negative battery cable.Normally the voltage level would drop if the start is working properly.

I hope you disconnect the battery or did you find it after the solenoid was attached, You need to replace the cable, good luck hope this helps.

sounds to me the ground wasent grounded properly or it touched the positive you could have crossed a wire or put it on wrong
