with the evidence, or lack thereof, for their beliefs?
science doesn't claim to know all the answers, it is a work in progress.
science finds the most likely cause and then tries to prove or disprove by stringent testing. revise retest and the most likely version that can be found to the best of our knowledge given as a theory.
christainity doen't even come close to this, it would fail at the first stage.

i think the first stage of scientific theory is to formulate a premis based on observation or known information.

If you look at history people have been worshipping things they don't understand. For example many people a few thousand years back worshiped the sun as they feared it would not rise in the morning. We now understand why the sun rises so this seems absurd. Greeks and Romans had a god for pretty much everything, again things that they didnt understand.
I think people believe in god because we dont understand what created the universe (big bang i know but what set it off) so we think that is some sort of being that is superior to us like god.

Actually I would say it is because too many people are trying to use scientific method to disprove the existence of God which makes little sense because you are trying to give a proof ( which also has to be testable) for something that by definition is beyond testing for and that the scientific method won't wotk on. Then the other side goes and tries to prove it will. Both missing the point that you can't define that which is beyond definition. Nor can you test for a first cause.

you people are still missing the point. give em a road map to chicago and they end up in china.
crazy peoples you creationists be.
science doesn't need to DISPROVE anything. there is NO proof of the existance of god therefore creationism and everyother theory about describing the origin of the universe starts at 0. some like the big bang and other theories about the creation of the universe or creation of life have proven aspects of it, some mesh with the bible, others don't so that they MIGHT come into conflict with traditional, unmodified creationist views. other theories that have been tested to varying degrees, or followed observations and actual evidence have 1s 2s 3s 4s 5s etc. creationism is still playing patty-cake at the starting line and hasn't even turned on the engine. They are screaming they are going to win the race but aren't even moving.

Science, which is the methodical study of the -natural universe-, shouldn't even come into play when arguing a supernatural being as God claims to be.
The two are best kept separate.
For instance, using science to attempt to debunk Evolution is entirely valid. Jumping ahead and using that as a way of "Science-ing" Creationism is not.
Just because you disprove one instance doesn't mean you have a clear answer, it only means that one answer is wrong.

It's probably a reaction to the perceived bashing they get from someone trying to use science to prove that their God doesn't exist. Evolution doesn't prove God didn't create the universe. But when someone tries to say it does, most people don't know that it doesn't. And if that threatens their beliefs, they will attack the science. Ignorance abounds on both sides.

There is no need to consider science when judging the truth of religion. Common sense will tell you all you need to know about religion. Forget science, unless you are lacking in common sense, as most believers are.

It creates a nice balance. One tries to disprove and the other tries to prove.
