what qualifiers are there for the "soul" that animals are lacking?

If they didn't have souls they couldn't empathize or show emotions. They couldn't come back to visit after they die if they didn't have souls. Animals are not lacking a soul. An apple picked from a tree and consumed by a human loves death because by dying to sustain a human, it evolves. Everything that is alive evolves: animals, plants, humans, etc.I've often wondered if true sociopaths have a soul. Maybe that is the root of their problem.

In a Human Being, the FreeWill is Located in the Soul, not the Spirit.
A Person (Spiritman) uses his,her Soul to Operate their FreeWill.
This is why it is so Important to atleast "Mentally Agree" that there is a GOD and that GOD died on the Cross for you (Jesus).
If you go around most of your Life Thinking NEGATIVE or Non-Existance when it comes to Salvation, all of that will be in your Soul and your Soul will actually fight you to get Saved IF you do decide to Accept Jesus as your Savior.
That could be Very Dangerous!

It is my opinion that animals can get the graces of God from being near us. The more an animal is exposed to humans the more divine it gets. The less exposed to humans then it stays more beastly. In many ways, we give our pets souls by giving them boundaries. Pee here --- Poop there --- be part of our being little one. Some animals seem to find the human experience enabling them to be more compationate and kind excelling past their masters, IMO. This doesn't mean they are born with a soul, but rather we share it when we share our experiences and behaviors with them.

Animals are animals.........why would god give an animal a soul so they have the will of getting lost as in hell?
