Well, if you are a monk or a nun, adherence to the morals and values of the Christian faith if you are single mean no sex since you aren't married, God's plan for your life, and because it is safe and one won't get sexually transmitted diseases. Also, perhaps genetically some people have such a low sex drive that they are celibate. I suppose one would want to be a bachelor because they don't want to be tied to another person or the responsibilities of marriage and commitment. For those called to either of these positions it is not unnatural nor a punishment. To disregard the call IS unnatural. Those not using their sexual energy up with another person can direct that energy to causes that are meaningful to themselves and others in a more focused and direct way. A good example: Mother Theresa.

There have been various bachelors throughout time, some better at being celibate than others. The celibacy protects them from the demands of family and their responsibility for their actions. That is not really a punishment at all. It is also a guide to a suitable existence.

Paul, formerly known as Saul, was an old old fuddy duddy. None of the bachelors I know are celibate, a fact they celebrate as often as possible. Some people choose celibacy over being hurt, contracting a disease, or lack of a suitable partner. RC priests have it thrust upon them by the Church, which I think is totally unnatural. For those who choose celibacy, its simply an accepted part of their lives and no big loss.

If a person is celibate, so that all his energies and attention is directed at being a better person and being closer to the Lord, then that person is to be commended. I personally could have never made that pledge. I am afraid, however, that we may find people celibate in public and otherwise in private.

well celibacy maybe. but some people WANT to be celibate (even for nonreligious reasons).

as for being a bachelor, how is that a problem? people choose that one all the time--they can still have sex, just with no strings attached. i know a lot of guys who wouldn't complain about that.

Celebacy is unnatural and should be broken at every possible convenience. Our goal is to reproduce and pass on our genetic material to the next generation, and if you can have a little fun whislt doing why the hell not.

Celibacy is the standard for any unmarried Christian (hetero or homo).

People used to understand as much, until fairly recently.

Celibacy is perfectly natural, and it is a discipline ... not a punishment.

Some people choose celibacy, others of us have it thrust upon us.

As one of those who has apparently had it thrust upon them unwillingly, I can definitely say that yes, it's very harsh.
