I have an english bulldog and I would like to show her, but I noticed her tail is high-set (not supposed to be this) and not hung low like the typical tail should be. According to the breed standard, the tail is worth 4 points, so I was wondering if this will disqualify her or if she would have a hard time finishing?

All dogs have faults.

Contrary to what the people above me are telling you, the judge doesn't "expect perfection" -- they, too, realize that there is no perfect dog. What they are looking at is the whole package as described by the Breed Standard...so if your Bulldog has a wonderful, standard-fitting head (very important in the breed), the correct structure and gait, etc, the tail -- although probably noticed and noted as a fault -- will not immediately disqualify her.

Of course, not seeing the tail, I can't say for sure. However, in my breed, we have a saying: A dog doesn't run on its tail. In Bulldogs, they never relied on their tails as a part of their function, and therefore it shouldn't count too much in consideration of the "whole package".

Your best bet is to find someone in your area who shows Bulldogs, and will evaluate her for you (that is, if you didn't get her from a breeder who shows -- if so, that person is your best bet). They can tell you better than anyone here.

No part of a bulldog tail should rise above the base, so as long as she doesn't have a brown/liver colored nose, she could be fine. Then again, this is not coming from an expert, but is intended to be helpful.

Best of luck if you do choose to show her.

Well, she definitely wouldn't win Best in Breed, because those judges are pretty rigid when it comes to judging bulldogs in particular. Even if everything else about her is perfect according to their standards, the tail would cost her a major deduction. You should go ahead and enter her in just one show, though, just to see how it goes.

Like Loki said, every dog has it's faults. And every judge has different priorities, some worry about tails, some are more interested in movement, some are picky about heads etc.

Someone once told me that if you have to go all the way to the tail to find a fault, it must be a pretty good dog.

yes it would. i got a dog who couldn't be bred or be a show dog because he has a slightly crooked tail. it doesn't mean that he can't have fun living life, though.

yes, in show an animal must be a perfect representation of the breed, or it will not place.
