what a disaster. first, the leash, if you didnt know, they can do quite a lot of harm to you when you have them attached to a leash. going nuts and clawing like he never clawed before. i never knew cats could be so dangerous. canèt forget those back claws and jumping in every direction. he is probally traumatized and i will have the scars to remind me of that day forever. such a bad idea. thanks.

Lol... I hate to laugh at someone elses trauma, but you have to admit, its rather amusing.
You can't immediately take him outside on the leash. The cat isn't going to be happy about being on a leash in the first place, so you need to give him time to adjust to the leash before introducing him the the stress of being outside. If a cat has been locked up inside most of its life, its going to freak out when it first goes outside. There are so many new smells and sounds that it can be rather overwhelming.
For your first trip outside of the apartment, try taking you cat to a quiet, out of the way park where there won't be any dogs or a friends backyard in a quiet suburban neighborhood. This will help to make the outdoor trip a pleasant experience and will cause your cat to look forward to its trips on the leash.

I'm sorry you got hurt, he obviously panicked!
Some cats take to a leash with no problems, others have to be introduced to it very slowly. If something scares them their instinct is to run, but when they can't, they start jumping and clawing frantically--it's a life or death thing with them and they have to trust their instincts because that's the only thing in their mind that will protect them.
Our Siamese took to it like a dog, but didn't want to go where I wanted to walk. My 1/2 siamese mix was fine with it and had no trouble. My black and white tuxedo guy reacted exactly like yours did. And I couldn't even get the gray one past the front porch step, she panicked and started yelling like we were murdering her (indoor baby, she never wants to be near the door ever). Each cat is different.

Did you start slow, or just put a leash on him and took him out?
You have to start slow with these things, make sure that at every step, your cat is confident. Start with a leash, indoors. Then when he gets used to that, put leash on, open door, put cat in front of open door. After awhile, the cat should get curious enough to want to go out.

I never thought about taking my cat outside with a leash until my sister did with hers. The problem is that she had a fenced in yard with no traffic coming by (especially loud trucks). Everytime, she would take the cat a little farther out until it was comfortable just doing its own thing in the yard. I tried the same technique with my cat. It worked.

Aw! I have to admit this made me chuckle, even though I feel bad for both of you.
I too have considered the idea of getting a harness to take one or both of the girls outside. I've heard negative things so I rather gave up on that idea.
I do let them out on the front porch now and then, although last night there was an incident and that may stop until I get a gate......

I don't mean to laugh, but you poor thing! Sorry you had to find out the hard way. I won't even think about taking mine outside because she's psycho indoors, I can only imagine her outside with lizzards and bugs. Plus I don't want my cat to get too used to outside or she'll always want to go out. One of my cat's when she was with her previous owners, got outside she turned very aggresive. And this cat is the most loving cat I've every known or had. I guess time will bring you closer to your kitty. Just buy a lot of toys and play with him, he'll warm back up to you. I wish you luck!

You should have every right to tell the person that gave you that advise that the advise wasn't worth the time it took to read it. Cats hate leashes, collars, and people attempting to treat them as dogs. Cats know they are higher on the food chain than dogs. Sorry that you got so mauled. Hope that your injuries heal real quick. God Bless you, and forgive those that gave you that advise.

I second that! bad idea,, my two cats never go outside (I live in an apt) but when I move its everycat for himself... I have heard of a cat being leashed before but I am pretty sure its one of those professionally trained cats. ;))
