A smart jack is an RJ45 jack that is used to feed T1 signals. An RJ45 jack is an 8 wire lead for 4 pairs.

For a smart jack applications, pins 1, 2, 4, and 5 are used with pins 3, 6, 7, 8 not used.

A smart jack's signals require a csu/dsu and a router. Most router makers integrate a csu / dsu and router in one unit today and call these access routers.

An access router is NOT a gateway router. A gateway router is used for ethernet feeds commonly fed from a DSL or CATV modem or from a stand alone csu / dsu or an Integrated Access Device (IAD) that takes a voice and data signal from a T1 and separates voice into analog voice phone lines and data into the ethernet feed. A gateway router's wan port is also an RJ45 but uses pins 1, 2, 3, and 6.

A standard ethernet LAN uses RJ45 sockets.

A standard 2 line phone jack is an RJ11.

You cannot connect an analog phone to a smart jack and expect it to work.

A T1 is a digital feed.

OK Class everyone raise your hand if you understood what GTB answered?
I think I'm the only one since I work in Telecommunications Lets see if I can make it a little less painful ;) lol

SmartJack also known as "continuity check transponder" is a device that is used to interconnect the Go and Return paths of a circuit at the incoming end, and through which the detection of an incoming check tone transmits another check tone to permit a continuity checking of a 2-wire
In other words, smart jacks are used for business lines, not residential analog as GTB stated.
