I was diagnosed with scabies today, my family was given medication to use as well. I'm just curious, should we vacuum the floor and furniture and things like that, and if so should we do it before or after we put on the medication?
Also, could washing our clothes before putting on the medication make them more likely to still contain the mites?
The medication I was given was Permethrin, the doctor and the pharmacy informed me that I would only need to use it once.

Would I need to clean other things, books, remote controls, things of the sort?

Throw everything in the wash on the hottest temperature. Medicate, then vacuum and treat your furniture with a spray of vinegar and water. They can only survive on skin so no contact until after it's all over.

The Red Book (Report of the Committee of Infectious Diseases of the American Adacemy of Pediatrics) recommends that bedding and clothes worn next to the skin for the four days prior to treatment be laundered in hot water and dried using a hot cycle. Clothes that cannot be laundered should be bagged for a minimun of four days. Scabies cannot live longer than this without a blood meal.)
The Red Book does not recommend vacuuming except in Norwegian scabies, a severe form with crusting and secondary infection.

The Red Book is the pediatrician's bible on infectious diseases, but personally, I'd vacuum rugs and upholstery anyway.

I don't think the mite that cause scabies can survive on floors and furniture. It wouldn't hurt to launder all your clothing with bleach and then put it through a hot dryer. Otherwise the Permethrin should work just fine.

Part of my family got scabies from a dog we got from a private breeder and all you have to do is go to your doctor and tell him/her that you have scabies and they will give you a round of pills to take.
