I'm turning 17 soon, meaning I'm going to receive my full license. I already have a couple of months of experience on the road, and I'm by no means reckless. (Not to show off or anything, but just to say that I am familiar with it.)

I know a lot of you will automatically tell me that I should get a Honda Civic or Toyota or some Japanese manufactured car. The thing is I have a strong dislike for those companies and most, if not all American cars. My main interest lies in European cars, mainly BMW and Mercedes.

I'm able to get a car for around $15-20k, and I was wondering which would be good ones to get in that criteria. Yes, I realize I'm fortunate to get a car at that price, but also keep in mind, I would be able to pay for monthly expenses like insurance, repairs, gas.

I'm looking into a nice coupe with 2 doors or something. The first thought in my mind would be a BMW 850ci, since you don't see those everyday. Would this be a good choice?

I knew someone would give me a smart *** answer within 5 minutes of posting my question.

Ok, wow you're all too funny. You got your point through: you're a jackass with some time to waste, great job

Can I seriously have some serious answers?

Thank you guys for the serious responses, but my criticisms on that is my town is full of 3-series, like you see those everyday, and if I were to drive it, my friends or anyone would see it as typical. However, if I pull up on something like an 8 series, they would say something like, "Whoah, wtf is that?? Is that like a prototype BMW or something?"

Also, aren't VWs somewhat crappy cars, being assembled in Mexico?

Lastly, I was thinking of customizing a car, so I wouldn't have to look for offbeat cars or whatever, but 2 problems arise from that:

1. Wouldn't that make my car more flashier in some people's eyes, therefore people would vandalize my car in some way?

2. Would people then view me as a racer and challenge me, or worse yet, a ricer, since I wouldn't be packing too much under the hood?

I must say that the 850ci is NOT a good choice for a 17 year old. Look for a good used 3 series if you want a BMW or better yet, get a new VW Rabbit. Teenagers DO NOT need performance cars. I dont care how much experience you think you have.

Dont rule out American cars, there are a lot of excellent ones out there that are just as good, if not better, then cars made anywhere eles.

Buy something in your price range and taste and leave a little room in the price for adding custom add-ons like tire/wheel combo's or spoilers, tinting, custom striping, etc. to make it stand out. Or pop for a offbeat style car like an Aston Martin or Saab or Volvo---the choice is yours, just make sure you can have it repaired fairly reasonably.
