No. Those are mutually exclusive positions.
If you are an athiest (one who does not believe in the existence of a higher being) you cannot be at the same time that there is a god who created the universe.
As for free will, only living beings capable of making moral decisions can have free will. Since the universe is not such a being, it could not have free will.
There is a theory, though, that God created the universe and then took a hands off approach, allowing the natural laws he established to handle it from there. Of course, this runs counter to Christian theology, in that such a case would mean that God created something over which he has no sovergien authority.

No you can't be an athiest and believe in god. But, you can believe that god created the universe and gave it "free will" to develop by evolution?

Um, no. Being an atheist means you don't believe in God at all. If you believe in God, you can be many things, but not an atheist. The word for someone who believes that God has not interfered with anything since the beginning of the Universe is 'deist'.

The definition of an atheist is one who does not believe in a god.
Therefore your statement that "believe god created the universe" negates that.
Thus they are mutually exclusive. It is either one or the other.
Maybe you want to be agnostic instead?

This is an interesting speculation and a valid reason many agnostics exists. The theory of atheism is that you simply do not believe in God. A classmate of mine, a very strong atheist assured me he was very secure in himself. However, he did attempt suicide at one point following that proclamation. I was raised to believe in God and our family is very religious however that same upbringing encourages a disdain for homosexuality and racial mixing and I decided I would like to reject that.(religion) However, I feel compelled to believe in something and therefore I choose the universe. I feel we all must have "faith" in something greater than ourselves.

No. An Atheist doesn't believe in God. There are people who believe in God who also believe in evolution, however.

Your question makes no sense. In it you are assuming a belief in God which does not fit any category of an athiest, furthermore, evolution has not been proven as yet, and I suspect it never will be due to the complete lack of proper evidence.

No. Putting "god" into the equation makes you a theist. If you change "created" to "could have created" you could be an agnostic. As it is you have described a what was called, in the 18th century, a deist. Many of the American founding fathers would have held similar views (although it was not politic then, or now, to admit it).

No. ***. *slaps forehead* WHAT IS WITH YOU PEOPLE. *sighs* Ok, I will actually answer this for you: atheism is the absence of theism. A negative. Atheists disbelief that any and all god(s) exist. Therefore, NO! Atheists make no claims, and you may be surprised to learn that atheists do not choose atheism. The burden of proof is on theists.
At least you're asking questions...
